Black Strobe \ Saturday
19th February \ The Medicine Bar Birmingham
The French duo Black Strobe
rose to prominence on the club scene with a series of
remixes for artists such as Röyksopp, Playgroup
and Tiga. Coming out of the dark, sleazy
Paris disco scene, Black Strobe comprises Arnaud
Rebotini, a well-respected producer and lover of diverse
music, and Ivan Smagghe, a twisted disco fiend renowned
for his sets at the hippest of Paris clubs. Their amazing
track "Innerstrings"
was released on Trevor Jackson's
Output label in 2000 - Predating the electro-clash scene
by a good two years, it was championed by leading DJs
including Andrew Weatherall, Laurent
Garnier and DJ Hell and took the listener on
a hypnotic trip into the noir
disco scene of Paris. Be prepared to be thumped in the
chest by the duo's dark electro disco.

Jacques Lu Cont \ Saturday
19th March \ The Medicine Bar Birmingham
Meet Jacques Lu Cont - the blue-eyed genius behind
modern pop music phenomenon, Les Rythmes Digitales
and now also Madonna’s bass
player. His brand of nu-disco may fool you into thinking
he shares more than just a sonic vision with contemporaries
Daft Punk, but this Paris-born
funkmaster's blood tests prove his
British bent. Mixing up high-octane Electro-fied
House grooves with breaks that remember '80s hip-hop
godfather Afrika Bambaataa with crystal clarity, this
Wall of Sound attention-grabber scorches
the dance floor with a hook-filled blend of retro/futuristic
vibes. (Incidentally, he has been known to play his
own records - though unlike George Michael, he doesn't
dance to them).

Club Softly evolved through various guises dating back
to 1994 before finally establishing itself in its permanent
home of the Medicine Bar in
2000. Since then its Residents, Slacker’s
Delight (aka Ollie & Bowen) have maintained
Club Softly’s freshness by avoiding being tied
to any one specific musical genre - their only prerequisite
is that the music is always dirty & electronic.
Club Softly has also held nights in Barcelona
& guarantees success by always maintaining strong
links with visual arts, as well as living/dying by the
rule that the party is as important as the music itself.
